How High to Hang Pendant Lights: Every Room, Exact Numbers

How High to Hang Pendant Lights: Every Room, Exact Numbers

Luna Light Studios |

Pendant height is the detail that separates rooms that feel designed from rooms that feel furnished. The right number depends entirely on what's underneath the pendant — here is every scenario.

Over a Dining Table

30–36 inches from tabletop to the pendant's lowest point (8-ft ceiling). This puts the light low enough to pool warmly on the table without blocking faces across it. Add 3 inches per foot of ceiling above 8 ft.

Over Kitchen Counters and Islands

30–36 inches above the counter, which lands the fixture at 66–72 inches off the floor. Countertops are work surfaces — err toward the lower end for task light, higher if the island doubles as a breakfast bar where people face each other.

In Open Space (Entryways, Corners, Stairwells)

Where people walk beneath, hold a hard minimum of 7 feet of clearance. In a two-story entry, hang the pendant so its center sits level with the second-floor line, and never lower than the top of the front door.

Bedside Pendants

Replacing table lamps with pendants frees the entire nightstand. Hang the bottom of the shade 20–24 inches above the nightstand surface — roughly shoulder height when sitting up in bed — and position it 6–12 inches in from the outer edge of the nightstand toward the bed. A plug-in design does this with zero rewiring:

Cheat Sheet

Location Height (to pendant bottom)
Dining table 30–36" above tabletop
Kitchen island/counter 30–36" above counter
Walk-under areas 84" (7 ft) above floor minimum
Bedside 20–24" above nightstand
Bathroom vanity (side-hung) 60–66" above floor

The One-Rule Summary

Pendants over a surface relate to the surface; pendants over open floor relate to people. Measure from the right reference point and the rest is arithmetic. Explore heights and drop lengths across our pendant light collection — most listings include adjustable cords — or filter by style in modern pendants and dining room lighting.
